1g Shifter Cables

Are all 1g cables the same? Busted the cables on my laser the other night. I read that your supposed to get cables from same year\drivetrain, but the details we're very vague. If someone knows more on this please enlighten me.

if you are a 90, you need 90, and if you are non-90 1g, then you need non-90 1g.

You can use 90 1g in other 1g and vice versa, but you have to modify/replace stuff - namely the shifter cable mount on the tranny.
