Does this happen often?
Who has had this and what did you do to fix it?
Other possible options are welcome. but I would like to keep the locks the same, I dont want to shave them either.

My driver's side handle came off once.  From what I've heard it's a pretty common occurence.  I just bought a new handle from the dealership. Only costs a hundred and something dollars.  You just have to get it painted because they only come in white.  And you won't have to change your locks so don't worry about that.
