Non-DSM - New here. Need some advice
« on: October 20, 2004, 11:43:33 am »
ok so I may as well make this clear to start with. I dont have a DSM. I do however have a turbo 4 cylinder car. its a 1987 XR4Ti. Not a whole lot of support for these cars so getting any help is next to impossible. So I figured the DSM club would be the next best place to come can;t really think of any other popular turbo 4 cars out there locally.

So anyways heres my issue. the car has a turbo 2.3 litre with a rather over worked Garret t3. theres no IC, no BOV, nothing. this is stone age turbo technolagy. Boost kicks in stupid late at around 3 grand red lines at 5.6 (yuck). but around 4.2 the engine sounds like it doesnt; want to rev anymore and all power just completely drops off. its as if I just drove into a deep puddle. So this gives me a power band of about 1200 RPM... kinda useless. So my question WTF IS GOING ON!? its suposed to pull to red line and it doesn't.

An old beat up 1987 turbo motor could have a lot of issues.........

Has it had a recent 'tune-up"?  If not, start there....

If yes, then perhaps start by checking static compression....

the guy siad it had had a tune up..but I dont; really believe him. it had the wrong plugs to start with so I was gettign spark blow out on boost. changed the plugs that fixed my missfire, new cap and rotor, wires. I tried to do a compresion test on it..but gave up. burnt my hand on the turbo one to many times.

I'll give it another go though.

XR4Tis are awesome.  I'd love to grab one, and might have if I hadn't been so dead set on a DSM.

I was listening to the Jim Rome show (team 1040) last year and they were making fun of this car cuz that's what Jim Rome used to drive.
