when i made my 2.5" downpipe i just sprayed some high heat black paint, from Crappy Tire on all the welds, just to at least slow down the rusting process, its been 5 months now and no sign of rust.

BBQ paint needs heat to cure though, so you might want to get some heat onto it before you try to install it or it'll come off on your hands. :?

VHT 1600 deg paint works awesome.

The DEI silicon coating is even better...

Most BBQ paints are only meant for like 800deg F.. you downpipe will probably see temps as high as 1300-1400deg. So you really want a high temp paint on there.

I used some of that VHT high temp stuff on the headers on my camaro and wasn't real happy with it.  It was beat by the time I got them installed because that paint is sooo soft initially then it's got rust spots all over again now.

The BBQ paint won't stand up in the real hot areas, I used to try and paint my exhaust heat shields with it and it's good for a couple days (long enough to do the FVT anyways) but then it's crap.  It would last all year on the muffler of my NT though.

If I were you I would go to Wal-Mart or something and buy the dupli-color high heat header paint and spray on like 4 coats of that. Make sure you let each coat dry before adding a new one.

If you used aluminumized steel pipe, you don't really need to paint it.  Paint has trouble sticking to it, anway....

Save some time/money and just paint the flanges/welds....

If looks are important, well, paint is no substitute for a real SS system......
