89-90 1G had 6 bolt with external oil cooler rad
late 90-92 1/2 had 6 bolt with water to oil cooler
92 1/2- 94 had 7 bolt (could crankwalk but less common than a 2 G)
95-99 had 2G 7 bolt (has many differences than any of the 1G engines)
transmissions from 90-94 are basically all the same the only difference is the flywheel bolt pattern (6 or 7 bolt)

thats awsome to know, i am looking into a 97 TSI AWD and i just learned about this "crankwalk" problem so i figured it would be good to know which engines it is most common in

thanks eh

2Gs have the highest probability of crankwalk, 6-bolt 1Gs the lowest.  It can happen anywhere, but not always.  There's a post on Talk with stats, something like 60~70% of 2Gs crankwalk, I think.  I dunno, been awhile since I've done any 'walk checks.
