Logger Cable Schematic - ODBI to Serial
« on: November 17, 2003, 08:55:02 am »
Does anyone know what the pin-outs are to make an OBDI to Serial cable?

Similar to this one...

http://www.dsmparts.com/data_logger_1g.htm

I have seem home made ones before so I was just wondering if anyone actually knew what the layout is.

Thanks for your help.

I think is for something different.  I do not think that there is any internal componets to this cable.

Does anyone Know.  I have see the schematics for the one that Chris posted but I am not sure if they are the same.

all cables have a rs232chip in them so serial (rs232) devices can read the hi/lo signals from the ecu... so YES the cable has a circut board in it with a chip.

I finally gotmy hands on one, but I was not able to make out the circuit board as most of the componets were surface mount.

I have 2 different schematics to choose from.  I am going to try to build the one Chris shows here.

I will let everyone know the outcome as I am sure some of you would be interested.

If someone has the cable that Martin Standish makes, can you please PM me.

I would like to take a look at it.

Thanks.

Alrighty...

I'm gettin frustrated in arguing with my Electronics Tech ...

Here's the schematic I've been given by someone who's successfully built and used a logger cable based on this design.
Please notice the note for J2 (db9 computer interface)

Now here's a basic RS232 port pinout config. (note: Direction is DTE)

Now here's the pin config for the MAX232 chip (page 17 fig.5) (sorry, it's a PDF)  Thus ensuring txd/rxd connections are matched up to the MAX232 chip.

My theory is, the page describing the RS232 is from the perspective of the computer (for lack of a better term).  Pin2 is set to receive and Pin3 is set to transmit.  Based on this observation, the cable would be correct in it's design by transmitting data to pin 2 (so the computer could receive as it's configured) then by receiving data on pin3 (as the computer could transmit as it's configured).

Can anyone back this up or prove me wrong?  I think it's all a matter of perspective and interpretation on what the datalogger schematic is stating.

Thanks.

The design is correct, pin 14 is t1 on the 232 chip, goes to j2 where it is called tx, it is tx'ing but is connected to the computers rx pin (2).

I'm temped to build this for my colt.

I'm also temped to build this for anyone that wants one.
