Rear main seal inner ring
« on: April 10, 2014, 08:48:58 pm »
Assembling a new rear main seal for the 91 and there is a metal ring that goes on the inside of the seal. It has a hole in it which i assume is for oil drainback? So basically I am just checking that the hole indeed goes towards the bottom of the seal|?

never seen the ring your talking about.  post a pic of it.   on a 6 bolt there should be a rear main seal (which has to be put in front the back side of the seal retainer plate) and the retainer plate,  you have to unbolt the retainer to change the seal.  other then that there is a gasket that goes inbetween the retainer and the block.   most seals have a spring which goes inside the back of the seal to apply pressure.

Sometimes at work big crank seals come with a installer ring.  its used to help protect and drive the seal in evenly on installation.

Ill post pics tonight.  Baiscally the seal goes in and then this plate/ring/retainer sort of snaps in behind the seal.

I put mine facing down as well, I wondered about this as well and I think in one of the shop manuals they mentioned installing it facing downward.
