Intake manifold question?
« on: August 31, 2012, 08:11:49 am »

Hey, I just picked up a couple intake manifolds.  One of them says CYCLONE on it rather than ECM Multi.  Anybody know what it comes off of.  It appears to be exactly the same otherwise, as far as I know.

A JDM motor I believe.
6 bolt short block (.02 over evo9 pistons). Straight cut oil pump gears. Ported 2g head and manifolds, GSC S1 cams(adjustable gears), undercut SS valves, bronze guides, Manley springs. Fp's Big T28, stock 02 into 2.5 downpipe, 3" from the flex section back. Apex'i N1 muffler. ETS fmic. 1g bov. 1g throttle body. 255lph pump. 660cc injectors. AFPR. SD on Link V3. 345 ft lbs 345 hp.

Cyclone manis are indeed off JDM motors.

They were also special, and different from the regular USDM manifolds. They had a dual-runner system that was controlled (not sure how) so that the secondary runners were opened, presumably at high boost or high rpm, to improve top end power while boosting low end torque. They require a method of actuating it (controller and solenoid), and I've heard the gasket for the Cyclone manis may or may not still be available.
Objects in mirrors appear to be losing.

Interesting, I'll have a closer look at it later on.

some JDM engines said "cyclone" on the intake mani, but the manifold is in fact identical to a 1g style manifold, and not a duel runner intake mani like the cyclone JDM manifolds are known for.  I have seen this style manifold on several pics of JDM engines,  never seen one in person tho.

if the runners are divided, its a true cyclone.  it will need to be actuated some how, either vacuum or figure out something with a solenoid.

I'm not sure that the cyclone actually has more flow on a high power car, due to the loss of volume in the runners, but on a lower powered car, it will definately help with torque.

Guys in the Mazdaspeed community routinely delete the variable runners to free up that blockage in the runners when building bigger power engines.  But, if you do it has to be on a fairly well tuned car as you will loose some torque.
