in the lower rad hose itself?  IE, something in the rubber?

I used to live up north and there are recirculating heaters etc for cold winters, but I have never seen anything in the rubber lower rad hose in any DSM I have ever owned or worked on.

Some modern German cars have stuff like this, for coolant recirc but nothing in an older car comes to mind.

Toss up a pic?

yea, that would be the sensor to turn on the fan.

Not a 1gb thing cuz I drive a 1ga, and it is literally right in the middle of the lower rad hose.

Brent, pic please.  Nice and clear, well lit.

It almost has to be a plug in heater of some sort, like a recirculating heater/pump for winter time.

sounds like a aftermarkt "block" heater... but they dont mount in the block... that style just requires cutting the lower rad hose, and putting the heater in it.  It will have a 120 AC cord coming off of it.

On 1G's with A/C there is a 2 wire coolant temp sensor on the top of the thermostat housing, closest to the rad cap... that one is for the A/C.

The one for the ECU that can throw the code is down below it (also 2 wire, but uses a different pigtail, and right next to it sits the 1 wire coolant sensor that the gauge on the instrument cluster uses.

And like everyone stated there is also a 2 wire coolant sensor mounted in the bottom of the radiator... on the passenger side (on a LHD vehicle) near where the lower rad hose connects to the radiatior.  This sensor is used to control the cooling fans on/off

Solution: go to lordco/napa/Canadian tire
Ask for a temp sensor for a 90-94 DSM or a 95-98 if u got that

Match it with the one on the DSM already that's the one u need to replace

Or: replace all :D at the same time to be super safe :D

I had the same symptoms with my supra vary frustrating pent hours fingering it out then gave up took it to a shop they charged me 300$ to replace thatch little sensor lol witch made me a lil agravated :P so now that's were I start :)
