Alternator belt too worn out?
« on: May 07, 2012, 09:22:04 pm »
Hey guys,

so I was driving home tonight, and my classic Battery+Rad+E-brake light came on and I thought the belt broke off and was preying to make it home before my battery ran out.

Made it home fine and the lights never even dimmed. I checked under the hood. Belt is still tensioned properlly. Ran the car and it seemed fine. The belt is about 4 years old though.

It is possible it could be slipping and not squealing? The three dash lights wouldn't go off.

I checked my power steering, that was fine. My alternator is only 2 years old, and my brake fluid is fine.

Anyone else have this happen?

I am going to grab another belt tomorrow form lordco, but was just curious if Im wasting my time.

I tested the battery last night.

I get 11.50 volts with the car running and it seems to stay there.

I drove the car within a 5km radius of my house last night, stopping and starting at least 4 times and my lights haven't dimmed yet.

This shit is weird as fuck.

I'm going to grab Ryan's Alternator on Fri prolly and see what's up.

I have a Optima red battery too.

I'm not even getting the interior lights flashing on and off when I hit the brakes which is usually what happens when your power starts crapping out. Everyhting seems solid, but those damn three dash lights say otherwise.

I mean I should have 12V on the battery, but it's 11.50V...   my guess is my alternator is just really slowly crapping out

Your alternator is dyin!  11.50v is too low.

yep, at idle even if the battery is fully charged and lights off you should see 13.3-13.6 or so.  If its just started and lights on etc, you will see 14.4-15.1 or so.

11.5 is not even close to enough.

Ive noticed that when I cold start my talon, it has always required somewhat of a rev before it would output the normal voltage. Otherwise the voltage hovers low.  Ive ONLY noticed this due to my turbo timer set to show me the voltage. Or else I would have never known. But it has always been like that. So everytime I cold start it I always watch that guage to be sure that I get the voltage up with a little slow rev. Ive tested the gauge and its accurate.
This doesnt really apply to the thread directly, but its good to get the heads up when you cold start it daily and may not know that you are putting unnecessary strain on the alternator. Some other cars may not do this...  But mine does. Ive had 2 different alternators too.
IF this is by chance the case in a lot of dsm's, then it may explain a lot of early alternator deaths in these cars. When you cold start your car (or start it anytime)  the alternator is put under the most load. You draw power, then the alternator works its ass off to get your voltage back up.
If you leave your car to warm up for 5 minutes every single day without that little rev it will kill the alternator quicker.
Obviously the heat from the exhaust doesnt help the alternators life.. So ive relocated mine to the rear of the motor. Maybe that, and a slow little rev can preserve your alternator  :) we shall see.

yea these cars have voltage regulators that don't come up right away at idle.  At least with stock idle.  Several cars of its era are the same.
