Strong fuel smell
« on: February 25, 2012, 05:38:39 pm »
Don't know what happened but lately my car's been smelling like gas pretty bad. Not so much on the inside of the car, but on the outside. Parked in the garage last night and I could smell gas throughout the house this morning. I don't see a leak anywhere, no gas on the ground and it's running the same as usual.

Any ideas what could be causing it?

Small leaks around fittings can evaporate quickly and make it difficult to locate them.
I have had that happen on the firewall where the lines join and enter/exit the (aeromotive) fpr.
That or the rail or injectors are typical sources for leaks, unless you have changed your fuel pump recently?

Check your fuel rail by your injector O-rings.

Had this happen to me when I O-ring blew out. Couldn't see any leaks on the ground cause the manifold held all the fuel from hitting the ground.

Have you touched your fuel pump assembly recently?  For me I had a damaged fuel pump assembly seal.   Very strong gasoline smell and gasoline sloshing down the side of the tank.

My injectors were leaky too, seeping ever so slightly unto the intake manifold.

pressure it up and look all over the place, starting in the easy places like injector orings or fuel rail fittings and keep at it till you find the leak.  Don't just keep driving.  Fire hurts when it gets on skin.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the help, looks like Kevin was dead on.

Turns out it's the O-ring on the bottom side of the fuel transfer pump. Car's at Midas down the street from work but they can't find a part anywhere for me. Anyone know of someone who has one or can get one? I had an appointment for Sat at RG  but didn't want to run the risk of driving it that long with a leak.

Thats what it looks like on a 1G.

2G's use a BIG o-ring.

You might be able to find it at a hydraulic fittings place... or if that doesn;t work, im sure you can get it at the dealership.  I doubt lordco/napa/wakefields will have that o-ring.

Apparently no one local had it, including dealers and lordco so they ended up flying one in from Ontario. They say it could possibly be ready today.
