No water for 14b turbo
« on: January 16, 2011, 05:47:06 pm »
I have removed my topmount turbo setup and I have no water outlets (factory ones were removed)
for the 14b turbo as my BW turbo does not need water.

Any chance of damage as factory wastegate arm will not be connected.???

just give it a bit of time to cool down after your done driving... but i imagine without the wastegate arm connected you wont be making much boost anyways.  perfect time to bring her through aircare!

most diesel trucks dont use water cooling anyways.. i think it will be fine.

yeah but with no boosting (well not much anyways) i doubt things will get very hot.  If you do boost it hard... just let it cool down for a few minutes before you shit it down.  Remember its just a VERY temporary thing to avoid having to re-install the water lines and such.

VERY temporary.  Yes, other center cartriges are not water cooled, but this one is.  Even at idle its probably spinning over 20,000 rpm and the exhaust manifold will be way way too hot to touch.  At cruise it will be spinning at least twice that and the manifold may be starting to turn dull red possibly.  Add some hills or a passing manoever etc, and its gonna get hot.  And to pass aircare you are gonna need to get it hot and keep it hot.  Sometimes cats don't light off until you actually drive the car fairly hard for a bit.  I have seen cars idlling for long periods of time with the cats not lit.  you can see it on the gas analyser when the cat lights off very easily.

Were it my car I wouldn't risk it.  Or I would put a known dead turbo in there just to run the exhaust thru and keep the air plumbing cosher.  That way nothing is going to get ruined.
