Mark you're right. When I was shopping for a deck, Pioneer, there were three different decks that all looked the same, but had different part numbers. My deck is 'DEH-P80MP'  But there was also DEH-P800MP and DEH P8MP, My deck and the P8MP are both the Premier models. The only difference I ended up figuring out was the Pre-out voltage.

DEH-P800MP - Was 2.5V I believe
DEH-P80MP - 4.5V
DEH-P8MP - 6V

Now this info may not relate to you exactly but just a more first hand example of what Mark said..
